Helping Your Italian Plants Settle into Britain

The right plant in the right place

Successful establishment begins with choosing a plant that suits its position. Sunlight, exposure, soil type, drainage, available space and the plant’s eventual size should all be considered before planting.

Good drainage matters

Many Mediterranean-looking plants cope well with cold conditions when their roots are not sitting in waterlogged soil. Improving drainage and preparing the planting area properly can be particularly important during a wet British winter.

Water while establishing

Newly planted trees and shrubs need regular attention while their roots establish, especially during dry or windy weather. Even plants that become drought tolerant later may require consistent watering during their first growing seasons.

Protect the root system

Mulching can help conserve moisture, reduce weed competition and protect the soil around the root zone. Keep mulch away from direct contact with the trunk or main stems.

Allow for North West conditions

A sheltered sunny garden can behave very differently from an exposed site. When choosing an Italian-grown plant, consider local conditions rather than appearance alone. Our focus is on hardy stock, but sensible positioning and establishment care remain important.

Ask us before you plant

If you are uncertain about position, spacing or basic establishment, speak to us when choosing your plant. We want the plants you buy from Brookedge Nursery to become long-term features of your garden.

Build the garden around structure

The most successful gardens have interest beyond the flowering season. Evergreen shrubs and architectural plants provide shape, texture and a framework that remains attractive throughout the year.

Italian style for British gardens

Our Italian collection is chosen to combine visual impact with practicality. Clipped and structured forms can bring a more formal Italian feel, while softer shrubs can be used in mixed borders and contemporary planting schemes.

Feature plants

A single strong specimen can be more effective than filling a space with many smaller plants. Feature shrubs and architectural evergreens work particularly well beside entrances, on patios, at the end of a vista or as focal points within a border.

Colour, foliage and texture

Flowers are only one part of a garden. Contrasting leaf shapes, evergreen foliage, bark, berries, form and movement can create interest across the seasons. We select plants with these qualities in mind.

An evolving collection

Our stock changes with each Italian delivery. This means the nursery can include unusual shapes, sizes and specimens that may not always be available from standard garden-centre ranges. Visit us to see the current collection.
